About the Author

Mary Thomas travelled to Singapore in 1939 with her brother Francis, who was returning to his teaching job at St. Andrews School. When war came to Singapore she chose to stay rather than be evacuated. During internment at Changi jail she secretly kept a diary, which is the basis of this book.

After the war, Mary returned to Britain and taught at state secondary schools in Gloucestershire and Essex. She retired in the 1960s and moved to a cottage near Monmouth in south Wales, close to where her brother David lived. Embracing her Celtic roots, Mary studied Welsh and joined Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalist party. She became proficient enough in the language to translate medieval Welsh poetry into modern Welsh for the National Library of Wales.
In 1998, failing eyesight made living by herself difficult and Mary, aged 92, moved into residential care. With the radio, audio books and the help of friends who read to her, she kept up with the news and continued to enjoy poetry and other literature. Mary was delighted to learn that In the Shadow of the Rising Sun was to be republished. On 9 February 2009, two months after celebrating her 102nd birthday and just as this book was going into print, she died in her sleep.
